The Real Per-Scooter Economics

Lime publishes bounty ranges in the Juicer app but doesn't surface the full cost structure. Doing the math on an example night helps you decide whether to scale up or stay small.

Two takeaways from this math: in this example electricity is a rounding error, and mileage is the dominant cost driver. Collecting in tighter geographic clusters reduces miles per scooter, so a 4-block collection radius versus an 8-mile one is a big profitability lever.

Zone Selection: The Bounty Variance Problem

Lime's bounty algorithm assigns higher pay to scooters that have been sitting longer, are in low-coverage zones, or are blocking specific deployment requirements. The trap: chasing a few high single-scooter bounties spread across a wide radius can produce lower net than collecting a cluster of ordinary bounties close together.

Practical zone strategy:

• Stay tight after 11 PM. Late-night clustering is when residential nightlife districts have the densest scooter drop-offs. Bounties stack and your drive time between scooters drops to under 2 minutes each.
• Avoid scattered "leftovers." If the map shows 3 high-bounty scooters spread across town at midnight, the math usually doesn't work after gas + time.
• Watch for "lost" scooter bonuses. Some scooters carry a multi-day "needs recovery" tag with an elevated bounty. These are worth a detour even outside your usual cluster.

Tax Considerations: What's Deductible

Lime juicers who are independent contractors get a 1099-NEC when they're paid at or above the IRS threshold: $600 for payments through 2025, and $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025 (IRS). Deductible expenses:
