Is Wingz Worth It for Drivers in 2026? (NEMT Pay, Requirements, Reviews)
Founder & Gig Economy Analyst
The Short Answer
- Wingz is now mainly a medical-rides company. It calls itself "a rideshare platform focused on Non-Emergency Medical Transportation," and most Wingz driver work is weekday trips to appointments like dialysis.
- Pay is per completed trip, at a price set by the broker. You see it before you accept, but the miles you drive to a pickup aren't paid.
- You need to be 25+, with a clean driving record, a background check and drug test, a 2010 or newer car, and state-specific training such as CPR or passenger assistance.
- Check your car insurance first. Wingz's policy covers third parties during a trip, not your car, and its terms make you carry rideshare-valid insurance at your own cost.
- Indeed's average for Wingz drivers is $733 a week, gross. Unpaid pickup miles at about 49 cents a mile cost $4.90 for every 10 miles.

Is Wingz worth it for drivers in 2026? It can be, if Wingz hires in your state and you want steady weekday work driving people to medical appointments. Wingz now calls itself "a rideshare platform focused on Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)" (Wingz), so most Wingz driver work is pre-scheduled rides to dialysis, therapy and check-ups. The catch is in the miles: you're paid per trip, and the drive to each pickup isn't paid.
I've never driven for Wingz or done NEMT work. My gig work is almost 4 years as a Lime LP, 42,000+ tasks, plus a handful of DoorDash, Uber Eats and Lyft trips. On Lime I average about 9 business miles per hour (ShiftTracker, October 2026), and the miles nobody pays for are the first thing I check on any gig.

What does a Wingz driver do in 2026?
A Wingz driver takes Medicaid and insurance members to and from medical appointments, booked through brokers. "Most NEMT trips occur between 5 AM – 6 PM, Monday through Friday," and "Every trip is roundtrip," so you take the passenger to the appointment and bring them home (Wingz drivers page). Some riders need regular trips, which Wingz calls Standing Orders, and those give you a repeating schedule.
You pick your own work: "Wingz does not assign trips or create schedules for drivers" (Wingz). Its Tennessee onboarding page still asks whether you "can drive at least 3 weekdays per week" and "can complete at least 10 trip legs per week" (Wingz help, October 2026), so plan on weekday availability.
Wingz started as an airport-ride app, and that side hasn't disappeared. A July 2026 notice tells its drivers that "Beginning Fall 2026, all TNC drivers must register and join the SFO TNCvq" to keep pickups at San Francisco International (Wingz help). But its driver page now covers NEMT only, and the onboarding states it lists are Louisiana, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas and Virginia.
How much does a Wingz driver make?
Wingz doesn't publish a rate. "Drivers are paid per completed trip, with rates determined by the broker and trip details. Longer-distance trips typically pay more" (Wingz). The good part is that "Trip pay is shown upfront before you accept" (Wingz help), so you can turn down a trip that doesn't pay for its miles.
Two numbers give a rough range. Indeed's average for Wingz drivers is "$733 per week" from "665 salaries reported" (Indeed, updated September 29, 2026). Wingz's own help center says "Some drivers make up to $2000/week" (Wingz help, August 2025). Neither says how many hours or miles were behind it, and both are gross, before your car costs.
You're paid weekly. Each pay period runs Monday to Sunday, and the deposit is "normally scheduled" for "the following Friday" (Wingz help, July 2026).
The miles Wingz doesn't pay for
This is the line to read twice: "Loaded miles are miles with a passenger in the vehicle. Miles driven to pickup are not included" (Wingz help). The round-trip setup helps, since the ride home starts where the first leg ended. But the drive to your first pickup, and between one rider's appointment and the next rider's home, is yours to cover.
| Unpaid pickup miles in a day (at $0.49/mile*) | What they cost your car | Per week, 5 weekdays |
|---|---|---|
| 10 miles | $4.90 | $24.50 |
| 30 miles | $14.70 | $73.50 |
| 50 miles | $24.50 | $122.50 |
At 50 unpaid miles a day, that's $122.50 a week, about a sixth of Indeed's $733 average gone before gas money for the paid miles. A Tampa driver put the related complaint plainly in a May 2025 Glassdoor review: "No minimum pay for canceled trips" (Glassdoor). Before you accept trips, look at where they start, and check your real numbers in the hourly rate calculator.
Wingz driver requirements
Wingz's driver page lists these for NEMT drivers (Wingz):
- "Must be at least 25 years old."
- At least 1 year of driving experience with a clean motor vehicle record, and a background check.
- A drug test, with random screenings possible.
- "a 2010 or newer vehicle", a four-door sedan, SUV or minivan in the Tennessee FAQ.
- Valid personal auto insurance and registration.
- Training that depends on the state and broker: CPR and First Aid, defensive driving, passenger assistance (PASS) and HIPAA.
Some of the onboarding is on your dime. In Arkansas, Wingz lists the PASS course at "Your discounted cost: $25", while the background check and driving record check are "Fully covered by Wingz" (Wingz help, October 2026). Other markets may differ.
The insurance catch
Wingz's driver page promises "No Commercial Insurance Cost" (Wingz). Its insurance help article adds the fine print. Under its Driver Terms, drivers keep, "at their own cost, automobile insurance valid for transporting passengers arranged through a transportation network company (TNC)" (Wingz help, August 2026).
Wingz's own policy is third-party liability during an active trip. If your car is damaged in an at-fault accident, it "does not pay for repairs or replacement" (Wingz help). The same article warns that most standard personal policies exclude rideshare activity. Call your insurer before your first trip and ask whether your policy covers NEMT or rideshare driving, and what a rideshare endorsement would cost.
Taxes and mileage for Wingz drivers
"Our drivers are independent contractors" (Wingz), and the terms say "You are free to work with other companies" (Wingz Driver Terms). So nothing is withheld: you owe 15.3% self-employment tax on your profit plus income tax, and you'll likely need quarterly estimated payments (IRS).
The unpaid miles do come back at tax time. Miles driven between trips are business miles, worth 76 cents a mile from July 1, 2026, and 72.5 cents for January through June (IRB 2026-29; Notice 2026-10; IRS Pub. 463 explains which trips qualify). Record your odometer at the start and end of each day in a mileage log so the pickup miles count.
Is Wingz worth it for you?
It's a good fit if Wingz hires in your state, you're 25+ with a newer car, and you want weekday daytime work with repeat riders. Seeing the pay before you accept is a real advantage over apps that hide it.
It's a harder sell if the trips near you start far from home, or if your car insurance doesn't cover passenger rides. Both costs land on you, not Wingz.
