The Short Answer

  • TaskRabbit doesn't take a cut of a Tasker's pay. You set your hourly rate and keep all of it plus tips. TaskRabbit's service and Trust & Support fees are charged to the client.
  • The only fee you pay is a one-time, non-refundable $25 registration fee, and paying it doesn't guarantee you'll be approved.
  • To sign up you need to be 18+, a US Social Security number for the background and ID check, a checking account and a smartphone, in a city TaskRabbit serves.
  • Every hourly task bills at least one hour, then in 15-minute steps. Neither TaskRabbit's rate policy nor its invoicing policy mentions billing for the drive to a job.
  • At an example rate of $45 an hour, a 2-hour job 10 minutes away keeps about $31.81 per clock hour after car costs and self-employment tax. A 1-hour job 30 minutes away keeps about $14.73.

Is TaskRabbit worth it for a tasker in 2026? It can be, because TaskRabbit doesn't take a cut of your pay: you set your own hourly rate and keep all of it plus tips, and the only fee you pay is a one-time $25 to register (TaskRabbit). What decides whether it's worth it is the time you can't bill. Every job has a drive, and on a short job the drive can take as long as the work.

I've never been a Tasker. My gig work is almost 4 years as a Lime LP, 42,000+ tasks, plus a handful of DoorDash, Uber Eats and Lyft trips. On Lime I average about 9 business miles per hour, because one task is usually a short hop from the next (ShiftTracker, October 2026). TaskRabbit jobs are spread across a city, so the drive between them is the number to watch.

How does TaskRabbit work for taskers?

TaskRabbit connects people who need help (furniture assembly, mounting, moving help, cleaning and other odd jobs) with independent contractors called Taskers. It has been owned by IKEA since September 2017 (Wikipedia). Taskers choose the categories they work in and, in most of them, set their own hourly rates (TaskRabbit).

TaskRabbit gives you pricing guidance built from "client market data Taskrabbit collects for your metro, task category, and experience level," but in its words "you still have 100% control of the rates you set" (TaskRabbit blog). In crowded markets your rate matters more for where you show up in search, along with your reviews and availability.

What does TaskRabbit take from a tasker's pay?

Nothing from your hourly rate. Taskers keep 100% of the rate they set plus all tips. TaskRabbit makes its money from the client, who pays a Service Fee and a Trust & Support fee on top of your rate, each calculated as a percentage of the hourly rate (Service Fee; Trust & Support Fee). Reimbursed expenses pass through at 100% too.

Your one cost is the "one time, non-refundable $25 registration fee," charged when your registration is processed. TaskRabbit is clear that "Paying the registration fee doesn't guarantee you'll become a Tasker" (TaskRabbit).

What do you need to become a TaskRabbit tasker?

TaskRabbit's list for US Taskers (TaskRabbit):

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a US Social Security number, which is used for the background check, and pass a background and ID check.
  • Be able to work in one of TaskRabbit's active US cities.
  • Have a checking account. "Savings accounts, prepaid debit cards, and reloadable bank cards won't work."
  • Have a valid credit card for the $25 registration fee, and a smartphone for the Tasker app.

There's no vehicle requirement on that list, but categories like moving help and delivery assume you can carry things, and most tasks mean driving to the client.

What does a TaskRabbit tasker really make per hour?

The one-hour minimum, and the drive you can't bill

"All hourly-rate tasks have a one-hour minimum charge," and after the first hour you bill in 15-minute increments. You can also set a 2-hour minimum, as long as it's shown in your category description and you note it in your chats with clients. A few categories are fixed-price instead (TaskRabbit). Invoices are due within 24 hours of finishing, for "all hours worked and any associated expenses" (TaskRabbit).

What neither policy mentions is travel. Nothing in TaskRabbit's rate or invoicing rules covers billing for the drive to a job, so unless you build it into your rate or use the 2-hour minimum, that time and those miles are yours to absorb.

The same rate, three different jobs

TaskRabbit doesn't publish typical rates, so here's one example rate, $45 an hour, across three jobs. The rate never changes. The drive does:

Same $45/hr rate (at $0.49/mile*)BilledClock time incl. driveCar costSE taxKeepsPer clock hour
2-hour job, 10 minutes away (8 miles round trip)$90.002 hr 20 min−$3.92−$11.86$74.22$31.81
1.5-hour job, 25 minutes away (20 miles)$67.502 hr 20 min−$9.80−$7.39$50.31$21.56
1-hour minimum job, 30 minutes away (24 miles)$45.002 hr−$11.76−$3.78$29.46$14.73
Illustrative: $45 an hour is an example rate, not a TaskRabbit average, and tips are left out. Car cost is miles × $0.49*. SE tax is 15.3% × 92.35% of (pay minus miles × $0.76), the 2026 standard mileage rate from July 1 (IRB 2026-29; it was $0.725 January–June under Notice 2026-10). *$0.49 per mile is an approximate full-cost figure for one vehicle: the author's 2016 Ford Escape AWD (fuel, insurance, maintenance, tires, fees and depreciation), from ShiftTracker's cost-per-mile estimate, rated medium confidence (September 23, 2026). Depending on your vehicle, your fuel prices and where you're located, your full cost per mile may be well above or below it.

That last row is the trap. A one-hour job half an hour away pays less than half per hour what a long job nearby does, at the same rate. The fixes are the ones TaskRabbit's own rules allow: set a rate that covers your drive, use the 2-hour minimum, and pick categories where jobs run long. Check your own numbers with the hourly rate calculator.

Taxes and mileage for TaskRabbit taskers

Taskers are independent contractors, so nothing is withheld. You owe 15.3% self-employment tax on your profit, plus income tax, and you'll likely need quarterly estimated payments (IRS). TaskRabbit sends a 1099-K only if you earned more than $20,000 and had 200 or more transactions in a year (TaskRabbit), but you report all of your income either way (IRS).

The drive that eats into your hourly rate is also a deduction. Business miles between jobs count at 76 cents a mile from July 1, 2026, and 72.5 cents for January through June (IRS Pub. 463 explains which trips qualify). Record your odometer at the start and end of each work day in a mileage log, and use how much to set aside for 1099 taxes to size your payments.

Is TaskRabbit worth it for you?

It's worth it if you have a skill clients pay for by the hour, like furniture assembly or mounting, and you can keep your jobs long and close together. You keep every dollar of your rate, and the one fee is $25.

I haven't looked into TaskRabbit here in Boise myself. With the Lime market where I live, Lime fills most of my year, so another gig would only fit during Lime's off-season. That's the slot a gig like this suits best for someone with a main gig: one that fills the slow months instead of competing with your busy ones.

It's a harder sell if most of your work would be one-hour jobs across town. Before you register, compare it with the other options in the best 1099 contractor jobs or the best gig apps for flexible work.
